Group A streptococcal pathogenesis: internalisation of host cells
Research description: Recent results from our group shows that patients with severe streptococcal infections receiving intravenous treatment with antibiotics still have viable bacteria 14 days after start of treatment. Group A streptococci, normally known as an extracellular bacteria, are found intracellularly and viable in phagocytes. The project aims at elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which the bacteria enters and survive intracellularly in the host cells.
